This paper is entitled “The Correlation Study Between MKK (Mata Kuliah dan Keterampilan) Theories and PPL (Praktik Pengalaman Lapangan) Scores at English Department of Uninus”. The purpose of this research is to find whether there is correlation between MKK theories and PPL scores.

The population of this research is the sixth semester student of practicum of teaching (PPL) of English Education Department of Universitas Islam Nusantara (Uninus). The number of the sample is 30 students.

The writer used a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The research is based on correlation design which is one subset of ex post facto design to investigate the existence of the correlation between the students mastery of MKK theories and practicum teaching (PPL) ability, and the degree of their relationship.

Using the person product moment correlation, it is found that there is a significant correlation the two variables at 0.76 and considered to be high. In order word there is a positive correlation between the student mastery of MKK theories and practicum teaching ability.

Introduction

English as foreign language program begins in primary schools and continues until colleges as well as universities. The objectives of the program are organized to the ages, abilities, aims of the students and the short or long item goals of the community. For example, the objectives are to give students a basic knowledge of spoken English or to have reading and writing skills and to have understanding of the culture of the English speaking world. So that, the student can read book, literature, report, research, conduct business and take part in international conferences which are all carried out English.

There are several objectives which can be divided into four major groups namely: The cognitive objective considers the use of language as a tool of thinking and creating new concepts and ideas. The instrumental objectives refer to the use of language to obtain material and concrete thinking. The integrative objective; emphasizes on the becoming a member of speaking society rather than language it self. And the becoming cultural objectives refer to the use of language to increase his knowledge to understand of the speakers as well as the culture of the language.

The teaching of a language always combines theory and practice; depending on the situation of the class, the condition of the student and the level of difficulties of the material. A teacher should teach with using methods which are suitable for the situation and condition of the student and there is something that can be learned used in all teaching situation.

In Universitas Islam Nusantara, there are two major courses that is MKK theories emphasizes on the basic theories in teaching language. PPL emphasizes on designing, applying, and evaluating. So the focus of the writer is to know the correlation between theories taught in MKK theories and teaching practicum of English teaching, by correlating those two scores.

Method

The modern methods of language teaching, with the emphasis on the teacher as instructor, require a more sympathetic relationship between students and teacher. So the student is a planner of his or her own learning program, monitor and evaluator of his or her own progress, member of a group learning, tutor of other students and learner from teacher, other students and other teaching resources.

A teacher has two main roles: the first is to facilitate the communication process between all participants in the classroom and between these participants and various activities. The second role is to act as an independent participant within the learning-teaching group

Teaching Experience Program

According to the teaching experience program handbook TEP can be defined as an effort to prepare students of education faculty to be teachers and educational practice to do their professional task. It is a part of education faculty curriculum that includes all preparation of activities before teaching in the class room and managing learning and teaching processes. TEP are: to educate the student of faculty of Uninus the skills of teaching to be used either inside or outside the classroom, to contribute the students the knowledge, abilities, observations experience order to be professional in teaching.

Findings

Having finished doing research on correlation study between theories of MKK and PPL scores PPL of English Department of 30 students of English Department of Uninus, scores data of this research have been obtained. This is the test result obtained by the group of students who had completed MKK theories and PPL. MKK theories include instructional planning, TEFL, research in ELT, curriculum and material development, language testing.

The writer took the scores of 30 students randomly and analyzed those scores in order to find out whether there is any correlation study between the scores of theories of MKK and the scores of PPL by using the pearson r formula. So in total there are 180 scores because the samples had 6 sets of scores, theories of MKK and PPL scores.

Based on the correlation testing result, it is gained the grade of 0.76. That grade is include in very high correlation category. It indicates that the subject of instructional planning, TEFL, research in ELT, curriculum and material development, and language testing are very influencing toward the success in performing practicum of teaching. Therefore, student would be better to be given those five subjects for performing PPL. It is included that those five subjects will be applied in PPL activity.
